The podcast health world and our world of oral health have crossed paths.

My favorite podcast on all things health and personal development Andrew Huberman had an incredibly insightful podcast on How to Improve Oral Health.

You and I live in this world of oral health everyday of our lives. You and your team are working hard every day to connect your patient’s oral health to their overall health. You create a hygiene plan for them, you deliver your standard of care when it comes to taking radiographs and recalls and even placing some patients in a perio program. All this is in an effort to deliver a healthy mouth, oral-health, so that your patients can enjoy a better overall health.

Now, a mainstream and popular Neuroscience professor, lab director and host of the Huberman Lab podcast, spoke about the importance of oral health and how to keep your mouth healthy.

He categorized patients (people lol) into 3 categories:

  • Category 1
    • Brushes twice a day
    • Flosses once a day
    • Visits a dentist (hygiene) more than once every 6 months
  • Category 2
    • Brushes at least once a day
    • Visits dentist every 6 months
  • Category 3
    • doesn’t think about their teeth at all 😒

This is not to say that all Andrew Huberman says is the be all and end all of oral-health. It is to let you know that your patients will hear this program and they will now be thinking about what it means to have a healthy mouth. They will ask you questions, you are their expert and health care provider, and when you are aware of the questions and concerns they have, you can help guide them towards optimal health.

Protocol he suggests to optimize saliva’s capability to re-mineralize your teeth is to take a break from eating or drinking anything for at least 2 hours to allow the pH of the mouth to reach optimal levels that will allow for this re-mineralization.

He pointed out that at night, we do not create much saliva so it is so important to brush and floss at this time.

Yes, you know all this and now your patients will be getting some confirming information from another well-know and respected scientist, so be prepared for their questions.

Huberman considers oral health as One of his 7 pillars of health. Great podcast. Have a listen.
